En 1896, Georges Méliès filmed The Vanishing Lady: the woman disappeared at the will of a man. This book proposes the inverse operation.
For the first time, a publication traces the history of women in prestidigitation, from Antiquity to the present day. From priestesses of ancient Greece to illusionists on contemporary grand stages – witches, conjurers, psychics, somnambulists, telepaths, prestidigitators, physicists, mediums – over three hundred and eighty documented female magicians, out of the three thousand eight hundred listed to date.
Les Magiciennes traverses twenty-five centuries and the major stages of this art: obscurantism, rehabilitation, golden age, triumph, recognition. A section is entirely dedicated to French female magicians from 1980 to 2025.
These are pioneers who were poorly known, or deliberately ignored, by the community. Their story needed to be told…
