En 1896, Georges Méliès filmed The Vanishing Lady : the woman disappeared at the will of a man. This book proposes the inverse operation. For the first time, a publication traces the history of women in prestidigitation, from Antiquity to the present day. From priestesses of ancient Greece to illusionists on contemporary grand stages – witches, conjurers, psychics, somnambulists, telepaths, prestidigitators, physicists, mediums – over three hundred and eighty documented female magicians, out of the three thousand eight hundred listed to date. Les Magiciennes traverses twenty-five centuries and the major stages of this art: obscurantism, rehabilitation, golden age, triumph, recognition.
