Born into a modest family, Thurston left home at a very young age and led a difficult childhood, marked by wandering and odd jobs. It was after discovering a magic show that he decided to dedicate his life to this art.
He began as an itinerant magician, performing in fairs and modest shows, before perfecting his techniques, particularly in card manipulation. His determination and showmanship allowed him to quickly rise through the ranks.
Major Career Milestones
Early 1900s: Thurston gained recognition for his close-up and manipulation skills, then gradually transitioned to grand illusions.
1908: He took over the famous show of Alexander Herrmann (and his brother Carl Herrmann), marking his entry into the world of major tours.
1910s-1920s: The peak of his career. He became one of the most famous magicians in the world, with gigantic tours across the United States. His shows were renowned for their grandeur and elegance.
Relationship with Houdini: Although sometimes perceived as rivals, Thurston and Houdini maintained a relationship of mutual respect.
Later Life and Legacy
In the 1930s, his health gradually declined. He undertook a farewell tour before retiring permanently in 1935. He died in 1936, leaving behind an immense legacy in the history of magic.
