Now You See Me 3: What We Know About the Third (and Final?) Installment
The criminal magicians return for the third time, with some familiar faces, some surprises, and a new generation of magicians. Now You See Me 3 will be released in cinemas on November 11.
When The Prestige met Ocean's Eleven, Now You See Me was born. It is a saga that combines heist film, magic, and illusion, offering entertainment full of twists and turns until the very last scene. The public largely enjoyed it, even if critics were more mixed. The first installment grossed $350 million and the second $334 million. This success led to a sequel three years later, which sought to raise the bar and the prestige at the heart of the story.
Often, the two installments seemed destined to remain isolated, despite insistent demands from fans for one last show of magic and cunning. After almost a decade, Lionsgate has managed to reunite the Horsemen. So, it's time to prepare for the film.
Now You See Me 3: What will be the film's trick?
The criminal magicians are back. The official synopsis promises a visual experience transformed into a big-screen spectacle. According to the trailer, Atlas is now alone and separated from the other three. However, an opportunity will make him reappear. He recruits three new illusionists to teach them the secrets of the trade. Their goal: the heist of the century, to recover the diamond heart, the world's most precious jewel, from a very powerful criminal family.
"They are dead," Danny declares in the trailer to his new followers. After a humorous pause, he continues: "For me, I mean for me. They gave up, and don't interrupt me!" However, the original quartet returns from their early retirement. They don't want to miss the opportunity and show the new recruits that they are not rusty.
The film promises an avalanche of jokes, without a moment's respite, with one twist after another. Let's remember never to look where the magician points, but on the other side. You must trust no one on screen.
Who's returning, who's missing, and who's joining the third installment?
This time, Ruben Fleischer (who previously directed the first two Venom films, both Zombieland movies, Gangster Squad, and Uncharted) is in charge of operations, or the show, if you prefer. He takes over from Louis Leterrier and Jon M. Chu. The four original Horsemen are back: Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, aka Danny Atlas, Merritt McKinney, and Jack Wilder, and Isla Fisher.
Never trust the magician
The female component of the quartet reprises the role of Danny's former assistant (and more), Henley Reeves. She was absent from the second installment because the actress was pregnant during filming. She was replaced by the character of Lula May (Lizzy Caplan). The latter was not contacted because the original idea was to reform the original quartet. Morgan Freeman will also reprise the role of Thaddeus Bradley, former magician and right-hand man of Dylan Rhodes' father (Mark Ruffalo).
The thirst for revenge for his father's death was behind the recruitment of the Four. Ruffalo himself, although not featured in any promotional material, is confirmed in the cast. It is not known whether Arthur Tessler, played by Michael Caine, will also return.
The new antagonist
The new recruits are Justice Smith as Charlie, Dominic Sessa as Bosco, and Ariana Greenblatt as June. In the trailer, June declares: "Eight magicians against a global criminal network? We have little chance." Rosamund Pike will also be present as Veronika Vanderberg, the film's main antagonist and matriarch of the criminal family owning the diamond.
Two old acquaintances
The peculiarity of Now You See Me 3, right from its original title, is that it plays with the typical expression of magicians. It expands the pool of users of the protagonists. Two generations are confronted. We have already gone beyond Generation Z, and the result promises to be even more choral and explosive. The two parties will be able to teach each other a few tricks. The new generation could hold many surprises. Will they be able to rewrite the rules of the game with spectacular and imagination-defying acts?
Now You See Me 3: Is it really over?
Despite the decade it took to make this film, a fourth installment is already reportedly in preparation, still directed by Fleischer. The latter expressed his enthusiasm in Variety, stating: "I had so much fun, how could I not come back?" The original quartet could return. Otherwise, Now You See Me 3 could bridge the gap with a new generation of illusionists. These will have to win over the audience like the previous one. If they succeed, it will truly be magic.
Conclusion
Ultimately, this third film promises to expand the scope of illusions and sleight-of-hand strategies. By mixing old and new Horsemen, the film creates a narrative where every trick can surprise. The intergenerational interactions add a new breath to the plot and reinforce the unpredictable nature of each scene. Spectators can expect a sustained pace, constant twists, and situations where attention must never waver. Consequently, the film offers an experience where magic and audacity combine to captivate until the credits. This third installment allows some storylines to conclude while leaving room for new adventures. It promises surprises that will delight those who have followed the saga from the beginning!
