Nowadays, there are places that are almost similar to Hogwarts! Indeed, places dedicated to learning magic have existed for a few years now, mostly in Paris, to the delight of people wishing to progress.
The Georges Proust Magic Academy
Located in the Marais district, at 11 rue Saint-Paul, this charming place is actually a museum on the theme of magic. We invite you to read our article on this museum to learn more. But more than a museum, the magic academy also offers the possibility of training young magicians in the making with courses offered to learn the basics of this art.
The courses are designed for all ages (from 10 years old minimum) and for all levels. In the lessons, the teacher will give the keys for the budding magician to perform magic tricks in front of a captivated audience, with a particular focus on presentation, public speaking skills, etc.
Le Double Fond
A legendary place in French magic, Le Double Fond was initially a cafe-theater created in 1988 where a small stage in the basement hosted artists from all over the world to present conferences or magic shows. The Duviviers (the family who manages this place) also own Mayette Magie Moderne, one of the oldest magic shops in the world, and it's located in Paris! It's therefore with all the legitimacy in the world that these people created the very first magic diploma recognized by the French state!
Le Double Fond thus offers a training program from which you will emerge with a two-year post-secondary degree in magic, perfect for starting the practice of illusionism with a solid foundation. Nothing is left to chance: how to build a repertoire of magic tricks, add narrative elements, notions of legislation, and even advice on how to prospect for clients.
In short, it is a turnkey formula that has no other equivalent in France and allows you to immediately dive into the deep end of magic to become a professional magician.
The BIAM
Another comprehensive training program exists to become a magician, with the BIAM: the Brevet d’Initiateur aux Arts Magiques (Initiator’s Certificate in Magical Arts). Be careful, however, this training is intended for professional magicians who wish to learn the basics of pedagogy so that they can then teach magic. Spread over more than 5 days, this training is offered by the FFAP (Fédération Française des Artistes Prestidigitateurs) and takes place at the FFAP headquarters in Paris. This diploma opens the way to various notions covered throughout the sessions, such as creativity, the role of the facilitator, the legal framework, etc.
Magic Clubs
If you want to learn magic with a teacher and you don't live in Paris, there are obviously solutions! Many magic clubs have been created over the years, more or less formal, more or less official, but always bringing together magic enthusiasts ready to share and transmit their knowledge to motivated people.
You will surely be able to find a mentor in these clubs who will be ready to teach you the rudiments of our art. To find clubs near you, you can visit the FFAP website (Fédération Française des Artistes Prestidigitateurs) to discover the list of all official friendly associations. This list only includes clubs affiliated with the FFAP, but it will be a good first entry into the magical world. Almost all regions have at least one FFAP-affiliated club; you can find the contact information directly on the FFAP page.
