When Magic Meets Mathematics with Mathieu Cima

Rare are the middle schoolers who spontaneously see mathematics as the
playground that we have, however, tried so hard to present to them. Behind sometimes
difficult-to-grasp principles lie true wonders, accessible to curious minds that take the
time to venture into them. This is where a paradox unique to mathematics arises: long
years of research around a demonstration can ultimately fit into a few lines on paper.
This quest for revealed simplicity, where each step naturally finds its place, fascinated
Mathieu Cima, a magician and scientific communicator, early on. He quickly saw the
parallel with magic: as in mathematics, hours can be spent searching for the purest
and most elegant way to bring about the obvious.
This ambition for simplicity is precisely what brings mathematics and magic together,
according to Mathieu Cima. The search for simplicity connects the two domains and
leads the one discovering the result to an often deceptive impression; indeed, behind a
surface obviousness, a long work of construction and search for the right angle has
been carried out. However, what will impress the spectator of the resolution of a long
demonstration as well as that of a magic trick, will be this technique erased in favor of
the magician's effectiveness in making people believe in a miracle.
Although magicians are attracted by the virtuosity of tricks, often valued, especially in
the professional milieu, it must be acknowledged that excessive technicality can quickly
become the enemy of fluidity. Extremely technical card productions, particularly
developed in some Asian magic schools, are a striking example. The magician's
dexterity then becomes what captures attention, both from colleagues and the public.
The question is no longer just: "How did he find my card?", but rather: "How can he do
that with his hands?". The beauty of the movement then takes precedence over that of
the miracle. This does not make these performances less interesting, but simply places
them in another aesthetic quest, more oriented towards the demonstration of virtuosity.
It is here that the paradox fully appears: simplicity becomes an ultimate form of
sophistication, where illusion can only exist when complex processes and technical
performance finally manage to fade away.
Nevertheless, this quest for simplicity carries a risk: by erasing complexity too much,
the trick can sometimes seem too simple to be truly impossible. It is by exploring how
the human brain perceives surprise and doubt that we indeed arrive at the following
observation: to seem impossible, magic must appear imperfect. The example of Jean-
Eugène Robert-Houdin's automatons perfectly illustrates this. By presenting automatons
of great technical complexity but in perfect working order to his spectators, the
illusionist did not really make a sensation... By introducing slight imperfections in their
behavior, Robert-Houdin, on the contrary, managed to reinforce the illusion: the public
no longer saw a simple mechanism, but a real feat. Here, we realize that perfection can
weaken the illusion, whereas an imperfection can strengthen it and create amazement
while leaving it to those who see the whole to explain what happened. The flaws then
become explanatory clues for the spectator, false leads that distance them from the true
secret while making the miracle even more credible. This idea also joins the tribute to
the fragility and imperfection of the Japanese Kintsugi method ("golden joinery"). A
repair method at the crossroads of philosophy and art, Kintsugi does not seek to erase
imperfection but to transform it into proof of a story. In magic as in craftsmanship,
it is sometimes the visible traces of fragility that make the object or experience more
precious.
Finally, this principle of imperfection serving wonder confirms an essential idea: magic
never relies solely on its secret or its technique. What transforms a process into a true
experience is the way it is presented and embodied. A secret, however ingenious, is not
enough to make a show: it is up to the magician, as an artist, to bring it to life. Mathieu
Cima thus emphasizes the importance of the theatrical dimension of the discipline. A
trick cannot be limited to its technical operation; it must be part of a story, an intention,
a way to touch the spectator. The magician then becomes a true actor, not just the
executor of a method, but the actor of a moment that he builds and shares with his
audience. Dead times, hesitations, become real characters in a one-man show where the
magician is no longer so alone... An idea that goes far beyond magic: like David Bowie
who created with Ziggy Stardust much more than a musical character but an alter-ego,
the magician must build a universe around what he presents. He does not just perform
tricks: he embodies an identity, a story, and a unique way of making his miracles exist.
When mathematics works behind the scenes and takes care of the mechanics of the
miracle, the magician is no longer constrained to devote all his attention to technical
execution. He can then concentrate on the essential: the presentation, the rhythm, the
story, and the connection created with the spectator.
Thus, by seeking to make simplicity appear without erasing imperfections, true drivers of
the spectator's questions, while fully embodying his role, the magician goes beyond simple
technical execution. He then becomes an artist capable of transforming a mechanism
into a moment of wonder. Through effects like ACAAD, Mathieu Cima thus explores a
magic where mathematics works in silence. An approach that is at the heart of his work
around the Chicken Principle, where an effect becomes the starting point for a broader
reflection on creation.
