Summary and Analysis of the Magic Film *Now You See Me*
In the list of films about magic, we had to talk about Now You See Me. This series, consisting of two films (a third is in the works and expected to be released by the end of 2025), tells the story of several magicians who team up to pull off various grand heists. In this article, we will revisit and summarize these first two installments. Warning: these summaries contain spoilers.
Four street magicians with unique talents—J. Daniel Atlas (illusionist), Merritt McKinney (mentalist), Henley Reeves (escapologist), and Jack Wilder (pickpocket)—are brought together by a mysterious figure. Together, they form a group called The Four Horsemen and put on increasingly spectacular magic shows… with a twist: they commit heists during their acts, redistributing the money to their audience.
Main Plot
First spectacular heist: During a show in Las Vegas, the Horsemen "rob" a bank in France live in front of the audience. The money disappears from the vault and rains down in the theater. The operation seems impossible and attracts the attention of the FBI.
Investigation led by Dylan Rhodes: Agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) is put in charge of the investigation, supported by Interpol's Alma Dray. Despite their surveillance, they fail to catch the magicians.
Second and third shows:
In New Orleans, the Horsemen empty the bank account of a corrupt businessman and distribute the money to the public.
In New York, they plan a final trick: to transfer millions of dollars belonging to an insurance magnate, Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine), live.
The Eye: A mysterious secret organization called "The Eye," dedicated to magic and justice, seems to be pulling the strings. The Horsemen claim they want to join this mythical organization.
The final twist: The film reveals that Agent Dylan Rhodes is actually the mastermind behind the Horsemen. He is the son of a famous magician who died in a botched trick, and he orchestrates this series of heists to get revenge on those who caused his father's death (including Tressler and Thaddeus Bradley, played by Morgan Freeman).
Now You See Me 2 (2016)
General Summary
One year after the events of the first film, the Four Horsemen are in hiding, awaiting instructions from The Eye. A new member joins the group: Lula (replacing Henley). But their return to the stage thrusts them into a new global conspiracy, pitting them against a technology genius.
Main Plot
A new show sabotaged: During an attempt to expose a scandal related to a tech company (Octa), the Horsemen's trick is hacked, exposing them as fraudsters. They are mysteriously teleported to Macau.
A new villain: They are captured by Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe), a reclusive billionaire and Arthur Tressler's hidden son. He wants to force them to steal a highly sophisticated computer device capable of decrypting any secured system.
Return to magic… and cunning: The Horsemen execute an extremely complex plan combining magic, pickpocketing, and distraction to steal the chip, all while deceiving their enemies.
Double betrayal and illusion in London: The finale takes place in London where the Horsemen fake a plane crash to make it seem like they disappeared. They publicly expose Mabry and Tressler as criminals live, using the media to turn public opinion in their favor.
The big reveal: The film ends with the revelation that Dylan Rhodes is officially integrated into The Eye, as are the Horsemen. A new, even more secret and mysterious stage awaits them. The Eye fully accepts them.
