These two cognitive psychology researchers at Marie-et-Louis-Pasteur University in Besançon immerse us in the fascinating world of magic to reveal the psychological mechanisms hidden behind magic tricks: perception, attention, and reasoning, which are skillfully manipulated by magicians.
Their respective backgrounds allow them to combine their scientific expertise with a passion for magic.
Playful and pedagogical, I greatly appreciated that the authors provided numerous concrete examples (card tricks, grand illusions, mentalism sessions) to illustrate their points and offered many links to images and videos accessible online.
Thus, these researchers invite us on a true odyssey into the human brain, explaining step by step how magicians use psychological techniques to divert our attention and play with our expectations. Their discussion goes far beyond simply revealing "tricks"; it allows for a better understanding of how our minds work. The authors emphasize that conjuring is not only a performing art but also "a valuable tool for studying human cognitive limits."
For this article, I have chosen four of the areas developed in this work: the brain, attention, reality, and visual memory. Here we go!
The brain.
"The magician's main accomplice is our brain."
This postulate seems to contain the entire scientific analysis of the art of magic.
Our perception is actually "very limited" and cannot "think of many things at once, nor process much information at once."
This limitation has led humans to develop "mental tunnels," sorts of shortcuts in our thinking, essential for our daily survival, given the constant influx of information we have to face.
But these shortcuts are also flaws, and it is precisely these flaws that magicians exploit playfully: "Magicians know how to slip into these flaws, exploit the shadowy areas we don't see to do things there that aim to deceive us and amaze us at the same time," in order to create what seems impossible.
2. Attention

Imagine our attention as a flashlight, but one that is poorly directed, or only partially illuminates what surrounds us.
Magicians perfectly master this mechanism, notably using the "magnetic gaze" described by Eugène Robert-Houdin: "Automatically, when you are facing someone, and that person turns their gaze in a certain direction, your attention and your gaze are drawn in that direction."
3. Reality.
Our brain spends most of its time reconstructing a reality that does not exist.
"Our brain is always reconstructing reality."
This permanent reconstruction relies on anticipation, a mechanism explained by our brain's desire to compensate for information processing delays: "Your brain will compensate for the mental image. In fact, you are always very actively creating images by adding a form of anticipation to them, which allows us to live in a coherent world."
"We have never seen an entire ball in our lives. We have never seen an entire sphere. We always see half a sphere."
"Our brain has this incredible ability, when faced with a world that is completely irrational because so many things are missing all the time, to automatically fill in the missing parts."
4. Visual memory.
One of the most disturbing discoveries concerns the fragility of our visual memory.
And we are mostly misled by a deeply ingrained belief: "We have the impression of being quite good at it, but in fact, we are quite poor."
How can we explain this simplification?
First, we must be aware that "we don't need to constantly know everything around us," because "the outside world is a kind of visual memory for us."
Cyril Thomas reveals his unique creative approach:
"In everyday life, I tend to always note in my mind why I made a mistake, whether it's a perceptual error, an error of inattention, or something else. To try to dissect that and tell myself how I can reuse it later in a magic trick."
This approach transforms every cognitive failure into a potential magical moment:
"I like making mistakes. I really pay attention to the mistakes I make, not necessarily to avoid repeating them, but rather to repeat them within a magic trick."
