The history of a word
Among the terms used to describe a magician, we find illusionist , sometimes conjurer , but also prestidigitator . This last term, formed from the Latin words presti (agility) and digitus (fingers), appeared in the 19th century under the impetus of an artist named Jules de Rovère.

Very little information had reached us about this man, who is nevertheless mentioned throughout an entire chapter in Robert-Houdin's books! Thibault Ternon set out to shed light on this strange character, who began his life with magic shows and then gradually shifted to presenting physics experiments. At the end of his life, Jules de Rovère delved completely into esotericism, claiming to have powers to heal the sick.
